THE ROOTS of the "Green Building" movement began on April 6th of 1993 with the official founding of the U.S. Green Building Council, and President Clinton's April 21st, Earth Day announcement of plans to make the Presidential mansion "a model for efficiency and waste reduction." Just three years later the 200-year-old "Green" mansion delivered a $300,000 yearly savings in energy, water, waste and grounds expenses.

R. L. BAKER began using many of the green build methods and practices over ten years ago . . . "and we continue to do so because it is just the smart thing to do for our clients — as well as the environment — we all enjoy the natural beauty of the Irish Hills, and make an effort to do all that we can to protect it."

ELEMENTS OF GREEN BUILDING: energy efficiency, water efficiency, material efficiency, durability and indoor environmental quality. Environment elements are also important, especially for lakefront properties.

THE ENERGY EFFICIENCYof a home is the key element in building green. "Eighty percent of all environmental damage on our planet deals with energy — finding it, transporting it, creating it, or using it."
—Joseph Lstiburek, Ph.D., P.Eng., a principal of Building Science Corporation
